If you’re experiencing discomfort in your pelvic area, such as burning, itching, or changes in urination or discharge, it’s natural to wonder what’s going on. Two of the most common culprits behind these symptoms are urinary tract infections (UTIs) and vaginal yeast infections. While they share some overlapping symptoms, they’re very different conditions that require different treatments. In this blog, we’ll walk through what causes UTIs and yeast infections, how to recognize their symptoms, and why accurate testing is important for fast, effective relief.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs anywhere along the urinary tract, which includes the urethra, bladder, and kidneys. Most UTIs are localized to the lower urinary tract– mainly the bladder and urethra– and are caused by bacteria, typically Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally live in the digestive tract. UTIs are extremely common, especially among women. In fact, more than half of all women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime. Common causes of a UTI include poor hygiene, sexual activity, holding urine for extended periods, and certain health conditions.
UTI symptoms can range from person to person, but generally include:
- Burning sensation during urination
- Frequent urge to urinate
- Cloudy, dark, strong-smelling urine
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pressure
- Pain or discomfort in the bladder area
- Low-grade fever
If left untreated, a UTI can spread to the kidneys and become a more serious infection known as pyelonephritis, which can cause high fever, back pain, chills, nausea, and vomiting.
What Is a Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection, also called vaginal candidasis, is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a type of yeast that naturally lives in the vagina in small amounts. When the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disrupted, Candida can multiply and cause irritation. Yeast infections are also very common, affecting 3 out of 4 women at some point in their lives. Common causes include recent antibiotic use, hormonal changes, high estrogen levels, and a weakened immune system
Yeast infection symptoms can include:
- Intense vaginal itching
- Thick, white vaginal discharge
- Redness, swelling, or soreness
- Burning sensation during urination or sex
- Cracked skin or rash
Yeast infections do not typically cause increased urinary frequency or pelvic pressure– two hallmark symptoms of a UTI.
Can You Have a UTI and Yeast Infection at the Same Time?
Yes, it’s possible to have both a UTI and yeast infection at the same time, especially after taking antibiotics. Antibiotics may clear up the UTI-causing bacteria but also kill off the healthy bacteria that prevent yeast overgrowth, leading to a yeast infection. If you’re experiencing symptoms from both sides– such as both itching and urinary urgency– it’s especially important to get tested so you can receive appropriate treatment for each condition.
Self-diagnosis can be tricky, especially since symptoms may overlap with other conditions like bacterial vaginosis, STDs, or even skin irritation from new products. Misdiagnosing yourself can lead to ineffective treatment, prolonged discomfort, or complications.
